These series with a gay, lesbian and queer perspective are set in Berlin!

All you Need, Babylon Berlin, Eldorado KaDeWe: Berlin is the setting for many series with gay, lesbian and queer protagonists. While some scenes were shot in the studio, you can visit other locations in real life!

All You Need

Four gay men are at the heart of the series, „All You Need“, which can be seen in the ARD Mediathek. Vince, Levo, Robbie, and Tom romp through Berlin in search of love, sex, fun and more. The series captures Berlin’s vibe very well. If you want to visit the locations of the series, you can party the night away like the protagonists in the club SchwuZ (here you can find more tips on queer clubs) or have exciting encounters in the gay sauna Boiler.

Babylon Berlin

Babylon Berlin“ takes us through a very different Berlin. The crime series, based on the novels by Volker Kutscher, is set in Berlin in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It follows Detective Superintendent Gereon Rath and his colleague Charlotte Ritter as they solve criminal cases together. Babylon Berlin highlights the visibility of queer people - who were accepted at the time - in nightclubs where wild parties are celebrated. The series, which is the most expensive German production of its kind to date, was filmed at original locations in and around Berlin, for example at Alexanderplatz, from which the TV tower has been airbrushed, or at Hermannplatz in Neukölln. If you want to visit the filming locations, you can even do so on a guided bicycle tour with Babylon Berlin Tours. (Here you can find info on queer city tours through Berlin).

Eldorado KaDeWe

The Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) is probably the most famous and prestigious department store in Berlin, with a long history. The miniseries Eldorado KaDeWe makes the KaDeWe of the 1920s the setting for a love story between two women, Hedi and Fritzi. Hedi works there as a saleswoman, Fritzi is the owner's daughter. Against the background of growing political unrest, their love must assert itself. The two find a form of safe space in the Eldorado nightclub, which was inspired by the historical transvestite bar of the same name. In the series Eldorado, Hedi and Fritzi live out their love to the full. (You can also explore Berlin in the 1920s on a Place2be.Berlin city tour from the comfort of your mobile phone or computer.)

Druck

The series Druck shows the lives of students at Barnim-Gymnasium (High School) in Berlin. The show, which has been nominated several times for the Grimme Award, focuses on teenagers who deal with issues such as racism, sexual orientation, feminism, culture, gender identity and more in both their school and private lives. Besides school, the series also shows many other places in the capital, such as the Admiralsbrücke in Kreuzberg, which serves as the backdrop for a first kiss. In the Moabit bar project Kallasch&, a character in the series googles the word ‘transgender’. In the Promenadeneck in Neukölln's popular Schillerkiez district, some of the protagonists meet to play table tennis. Sense8

The Netflix production Sense8 tells the story of eight people who suddenly and mysteriously become connected mentally and physically. Together they have to figure out how to outsmart a common enemy. The eight protagonists live in different places around the world, one of them, Wolfgang, in Berlin. In the two seasons and the final film, the Sense8 characters are routinely drawn to the German capital. The eight are also connected on a sexual level. There is a very sensual scene, for example, in which Wolfgang first does his rounds naked in the Stadtbad Neukölln and settles down in a jacuzzi. There he is tracked down by some of his companions and an intimate encounter between the protagonists begins. (If you also want to explore Berlin's spas and baths, you'll find more info here).
