5 Berlin Pubs to Hang out in

Who hasn't experienced it: your pulse is racing; it's been a long night; you're too tired to dance, but still don't want to go home? It is time then to head to a pub for a last drink (or two) and enjoy friendly company a little while longer. After recommending a few fine cocktail bars for special occasions, this guide is all about the relaxed and queer-friendly pubs where you can enjoy a casual beer or two.

Here, hanging out in the pub becomes an art project: Kumpelnest 3000.

Kumpelnest 3000

There is a particularly interesting story behind the Kumpelnest 3000 pub on a side street of Potsdamer Straße in Berlin-Tiergarten. It was initially opened as part of then-student Ernestus’s final Art project for the University of the Arts (UdK). Although the bar was meant primarily as a work of art, it has managed to survive over the years, and it has simultaneously earned a reputation as being both a queer bar on the one hand, and as a place where you can happily hang out with good friends on the other. The good thing is that if that’s your experience in Kumpelnest 3000, you automatically become part of contemporary art. That can only be a good thing, right?

Roses

Similar to Kumpelnest 3000, Roses could well have been an art project once - but it hasn't. The quirky Kreuzberg bar with its plush pink ambience has long since achieved cult status, and rightly so, because it is definitely worth a visit. The small, cramped bar creates a particularly heart-warming and often wacky atmosphere. Quaint, kitschy and quirky: Bei Schlawinchen.

Bei Schlawinchen

Let's now move on to a very special category of bars in Berlin: Eckkneipen. These are often gastronomic establishments with a long history and a very local clientele. Schlawinchen in Kreuzberg is one of the most unusual corner pubs in the city. This is also because of the interior, which is simultaneously quaint, kitschy and eccentric. Conveniently, the pub is open around the clock. So, if you need a beer late at night, head on over.

The city gathers in typical Berlin corner pubs - like here in the Quelle in Berlin-Moabit.

Zur Quelle

The corner pub Zur Quelle is another Berlin icon and is probably the most famous pub in the Moabit district. Similar to Schlawinchen, Quelle is also open around the clock. Moabit has changed and developed quite a bit in recent years, so it is no longer just the denizens of the district who meet here, but also newcomers and guests for an after-work beer - and all in a warm and unpretentious atmosphere.

In the beautiful Graefekiez, the Fuchsbau is a meeting place for the neighbourhood.

Fuchsbau

The Fuchsbau bar is located at the junction of the pretty, small and cosy Graefestraße in Berlin-Kreuzberg and the Landwehrkanal. It is one of the most popular bars in the district and attracts a young, hip crowd. With its relaxed atmosphere and informal ambience, the pub manages to turn strangers into friends in no time.
